Pumps for Dredgers

When drawing up the technical specification for a dredger order, many parameters and characteristics must be taken into account. The main difference between all dredger models is the type of pump installed on them. It is the selected pump that determines the dredger's slurry capacity and the head it develops.

When selecting a pump for a dredger, you first need to determine the category of soil to be dredged. Only then will our managers be able to offer a pump whose capacity matches your technical specification.

A dredger's capacity is determined by the volume of slurry pumped per hour. The head is an equally important parameter, since it determines the distance over which the slurry can be transported. For example, a head of 30 m can transport the dredged soil over a distance of up to 800 meters.

No less important is the way the pump is mounted on the dredger, and there are several options. The most common method is hull mounting, i.e. the pump is installed inside the dredger hull. This greatly simplifies maintenance, and this type of installation also reduces the energy consumption associated with lifting the slurry during suction, because the pump axis is below the water level.

If you need to dredge soil at great depth, our managers will offer you a pump mounted on the suction ladder, since this installation method shortens the suction distance. However, this method is only suitable for dredgers with a large suction ladder and an appropriate auxiliary drive.

We can also offer you a submersible pump. Its design is such that the pump, together with the discharge pipeline, can itself act as a dredging machine, requiring only a mechanism that keeps the structure afloat. The pump is supplied in a sealed housing that protects from moisture not only the pump itself but also the electric or hydraulic drive that powers the impeller. Such pumps can operate at great depths and are extremely productive with low energy consumption.

Last on our list, but not least in importance, is the passage size. This parameter determines the maximum permissible size of particles contained in the slurry. Obviously, a stone 20 cm in diameter will never pass through a pipe with a 15 cm bore and will cause the pump to stop or break down. To avoid such situations, the suction head is additionally fitted with a grate.
