Marine Engines

No machine can work without a heart, namely a drive (engine). A dredger's pump also needs a drive that powers not only the pump but the entire dredger.

There are several types of drives, classified mainly by their operating principle: electric, mechanical and hydraulic. To operate a mechanical drive, a diesel engine must be started to rotate the shaft. A mechanical drive is well suited for dredging works, as it allows the pump head and capacity to be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the engine speed.

If the dredger is to be used, for example, for sand mining in a quarry, our managers will recommend fitting the dredger with an electric drive, as it is ideal for work in confined areas. A high-voltage cable is laid along the floating discharge pipeline, running to the dredger from a transformer substation located on shore. This method of power supply is less costly than, for example, the fuel consumed during hydraulic fill operations.

If you need to dredge mixed soils, a hydraulic drive should definitely be installed on the dredger. This type of drive makes it possible to vary the pump impeller speed significantly without adjusting the power. However, when working with mixed soils, you need not only properly selected equipment but also a crew led by an experienced dredge master who can determine the right pump speed based on their expertise.
