Ukraine is an agrarian country. At the same time, in recent years, the number of farms and agricultural cooperatives in Ukraine has been constantly growing. And this increase is provided, first of all, by representatives of small and medium business. Such small enterprises are very often located at a great distance from large agricultural “hubs” and elevators, they do not have their own facilities for storing and drying harvested crops. Therefore, they constitute the lion’s share of the total crops grown in the country, and it is they who each year have to solve complex seasonal logistic tasks. Take, for example, a conditional farmer from Cherkasy region engaged in the cultivation of grain. And this is only in one direction, excluding the cost of returning transport to the base of the carrier company, which will certainly be included in the cost of the order. Even with their own fleet, representatives of agribusiness today cannot count on the cost of transporting such a consignment one way lower than 50 thousand hryvnia without taking the road back. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the depreciation of vehicles, the cost of maintaining the fleet – from full-time mechanics, to drivers in accordance with the number of available cars, maintenance, transport tax and other aspects of the organization of its own logistics department.
The small-sized self-propelled barge DRW-80 from the company “Dredgers of Ukraine” offers a unique cost for delivering one ton of grain or other cargo at this level for such cargo vehicles at a level of 0.3-0.31 UAH per kilometer. Simply put, one “walk” of the barge DRW-80, carrying 200 tons of cargo at the same distance, saves the sender at least 75,000 hryvnias compared to hired transportation and about 50,000 hryvnias compared to self-organized transportation.
Taking into account the fact that the barge travels the indicated waterway in about 32-34 hours, and the grain-carrier in just 4-5 hours, one would assume that 6 or more grain-carriers will have time to transport the same volume of cargo, which means that sense to keep the fleet too large. But in the summer season, when the pavements warm up and the restriction on the movement of heavy trucks in the daytime begins to operate, this figure drops by half. As a result, in order to compare with the speed of transporting barge, an enterprise will need from 10 or more machines.

Twice as economical as a large barge
Some agricultural producers who are ready to boast of larger volumes of production often use the services of hired barges with a capacity of 3,000 tons or more. In this case, we can talk not only about the delivery of goods to port terminals, but also about the transshipment of goods to ships at sea practiced today. Such transportation is cheaper than the option of road transport – about 0.6 hryvnia per ton / kilometer, but it has a whole set of nuances.
Firstly, the economic feasibility of using this kind of watercraft requires their full loading – and this is at least 3,000 tons of cargo at a time. Secondly, the loading of a large barge by an agricultural producer requires the availability of expensive infrastructure and a reservoir located near the reservoir with a channel of appropriate depth. The small size barge DRW-80 has a draft of only 130 centimeters, so the culture can be loaded on board in almost any conditions. The transshipment of bulk cargo is ensured by the use of special vacuum pumps directly from the body of any vehicle used to transport the collected raw materials from storage to the place of loading onto the barge.

And after all, there are a lot of rural farms, processing facilities and industrial productions that have the ability to organize the transportation of harvested crops and other goods to the shore of a small reservoir that has access to the main river arteries in the country. Finally, in terms of real money, the barge DRW-80 is still twice the more economical way to transport cargo across the reservoir from point A to point B. Moreover, owning a small barge can be an excellent way of investing not only savings in transportation, but and to generate additional revenue in the provision of transport services to other cargo owners operating in batches of medium volumes. As a result, the year-round operation of the DRW-80 barge will recoup the cost of its acquisition, maintenance and crew salaries of four people at a distance of 2-3 years, which can be called one of the highest rates today.
